Sticks and stones may break my bones....

You all know the old rhyme we used to shout out other children showing our defiance at being hurt by the words our tormentors threw at us. I've come to a point in my life where I am not all that stung by the derogatory barbs sent my way. But there is one label that if it is hung on me, it would sting, and not just a little.

That would be being called incompetent. Now, let me me start out of the gate that there are several aspects of life in which I am incompetent. For example, I'm not much of a mechanic. And I don't think anyone will be showing my works of art in any museum any time soon. Probably because there aren't any.

But in the day to day world I go through, I would like to think that I do have a degree of competence. That's why this article from Patrick Carroll struck a chord with me and we talked about it on the radio show this morning.

Competency is the cornerstone of success in any endeavor, be it personal or professional. It encompasses a combination of knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes required to perform tasks effectively. In a world that is constantly evolving, competency becomes increasingly vital as it enables individuals to adapt to new challenges, seize opportunities, and thrive in diverse environments.

At its core, competency ensures proficiency in a specific field or role. Whether it's mastering technical skills in a specialized profession or developing soft skills such as communication and teamwork, competence forms the foundation upon which expertise is built. Competent individuals not only excel in their primary responsibilities but also demonstrate versatility and resilience when faced with unexpected circumstances.

In the workplace, competency plays a pivotal role in driving productivity and organizational success. Employees who possess the necessary competencies contribute meaningfully to their teams, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. Moreover, competent leaders inspire trust and confidence, empowering their teams to achieve ambitious goals and navigate complex challenges with poise.

Beyond the realm of employment, competency is equally crucial in personal development. Whether pursuing academic excellence, nurturing relationships, or pursuing hobbies, the ability to effectively apply knowledge and skills is essential for fulfillment and growth. Competent individuals exhibit a lifelong commitment to learning and self-improvement, continuously seeking new opportunities to expand their horizons and enhance their capabilities.

Competency is not merely a desirable trait but an indispensable asset in both professional and personal spheres. It empowers individuals to perform at their best, contribute meaningfully to their communities, and navigate the complexities of modern life with resilience and adaptability. By prioritizing the development of competency, individuals can unlock their full potential and chart a path towards success and fulfillment.

I hope that I do exhibit a degree of competency in the workplace and in my personal life. Heck, someday, I might even be a competent writer.
