The Utah Food Bank’s 4th Annual Feed Utah Food Drive is set to take place on Saturday, March 15, providing an opportunity for southern Utah residents to help fight food insecurity. Jacob Miner, Director of the Southern Distribution Center for the Utah Food Bank, recently spoke on KSUB Radio about the event and its impact on local communities.

“This week you should be getting a door hanger on your door,” Miner explained. “It’s going to be white and red. It’s going to give you some instructions there on when we need the food out. If you could have the food on your doorstep before 9:00 AM on Saturday morning, volunteers will come by and pick that up.” Donations will be distributed to food pantries in Iron, Washington, Beaver, Garfield, and Kane counties.

For those unable to leave food donations, Miner highlighted a digital giving option. “That QR code gives folks the ability, if they don’t have food or if they would just like to give monetarily,” he said. “Every dollar donated, we can turn into $7.80 worth of food and services.” He also noted an anonymous donor has pledged to match donations up to $68,000 during the event.

The need for assistance continues to grow. “Statewide, there’s 415,000 Utahns that are at risk of missing a meal today,” Miner stated. “In southern Utah, believe it or not, there’s 38,000 Southern Utahns that are facing food insecurity right now.” He emphasized that rising costs and economic challenges have placed many families in difficult situations.

Last year, the Feed Utah Food Drive collected over 130,000 pounds of food in southern Utah alone. Miner expressed hope that this year’s drive would meet or exceed that total. “You guys did a phenomenal job, southern Utah, last year. Let’s do it again this year,” he encouraged.
