Usually, if you want to hear a virtuoso performance of the Utah Symphony Orchestra, that would mean packing up the car and making a trip to Salt Lake City. Then you would likely add in a stay at a hotel, since the concert would likely end a such a time that making the trip back to southern Utah unwise. Add to that the sketchy weather you could face on the roads in the upcoming months, and it could be a very inconvenient situation.

But, tonight, thanks to Cedar City Music Arts, you can enjoy a performance from the Utah Symphony Orchestra right here in Cedar City. The symphony will be the kick off concerts for the 2025-2026 season for Cedar City Music Arts.

Marty Warburton was on the radio with us and told us, “The Utah Symphony rolls in to town (Tuesday).” Planning for this season actually started at the beginning of the 2024season, and Warburton told us they are already in the planning stages for the 2026-2027 season. And according to Warburton, Cedar City is becoming a known commodity among musical performers. He said, “we're kind of on the radar of these artists now. It used to be, back in the day we would have to kind of beat the brush. Now, we're the ones getting the phone calls.”

It Takes A Truckload Of People To Bring The Utah Symphony To Town

Regarding the Utah Symphony concert set for this evening, Warburton said, “there's more than 90 people involved in this operation. A couple of busses and two or three semis full of (instruments).”

The Utah Symphony was founded in 1940, and is one of the nations major symphony orchestras. The orchestra generally performs over 175 concerts each season, and have played in Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Arts Center. The Utah Symphony was founded by conductor Maurice Abravanel. Abravanel served as the music director for over three decades, from 1947 to 1979.

According to Warburton, the orchestra will be spending the night in Cedar City, and will give a performance Wednesday morning for students in the Iron County School District. “as I understand it, it's plum full of kids,” Warburton said, “that's 900 kids at 10 O'Clock in the morning. Try to imagine that kind of energy.”
