A new national study is highlighting just how quickly the cost of raising a child is climbing, and Utah is among the states seeing some of the sharpest increases.
According to a recent analysis from LendingTree, the average cost of raising a child in the United States has surged to nearly $300,000 through age 18. That figure represents a jump of more than 25 percent in just a few years, reflecting rising prices across nearly every category families depend on.

Utah stands out in the report as one of the five states where the cost of raising a child has increased the most. While the state has long been known for relatively affordable living and larger-than-average family sizes, the latest data suggests that financial pressures are mounting quickly for parents across the Beehive State. Even so, Utah still comes in below the national average in annual child-rearing costs, with families spending about $25,558 per year compared to roughly $29,000 nationwide.

Child Care Cost Drive The Increase

Much of the increase is being driven by child care costs, which have risen dramatically nationwide. Day care expenses alone have climbed by more than 50 percent in recent years, becoming one of the single largest financial burdens for young families. Food prices and health insurance premiums have also seen significant increases, further stretching household budgets.

On average, families now spend more than $29,000 per year to raise a child, with those costs consuming roughly 22 percent of a household’s income. For many Utah families, where wages have not always kept pace with rapid population growth and housing demand, that percentage can feel even higher in practice.

The study also points to broader impacts beyond monthly budgets. A majority of parents report that raising children is more expensive than they expected, and many say they have taken on debt to cover those costs. Others report delaying or reconsidering having additional children altogether, a notable shift in a state that has historically ranked among the highest in the nation for birth rates.

While Utah remains more affordable than some coastal states, its placement among those with the fastest-rising child-rearing costs suggests a changing economic landscape. Population growth, housing pressures, and increasing demand for services like child care are all likely contributing factors.

The findings serve as a reminder that even in traditionally family-friendly states like Utah, the economics of raising children are becoming more complex. As costs continue to rise, families, policymakers, and community organizations may all play a role in finding ways to ease the burden and preserve the state’s long-standing reputation as a place where families can thrive.
