Temple Square Partially Reopens

Temple Square is gradually reopening to the public, with the southwest corner now accessible. While landscaping remains in progress, visitors can view three newly restored monuments. These include the historic Seagull Monument, originally dedicated in 1913, and two statues depicting the restoration of the priesthood. One portrays Joseph Smith receiving the Melchizedek Priesthood from Apostles Peter, James, and John (2006), while the other shows John the Baptist conferring the Aaronic Priesthood upon Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery (1957).

With this reopening, visitors can now walk along the entire west side of Temple Square, which also features landmarks such as the Salt Lake Tabernacle, Assembly Hall, and the FamilySearch Library and Church History Museum across the street.

Construction continues on several key areas of the temple, including a new sealing wing on the north side. This addition, resting on base isolators for earthquake resilience, will include five sealing rooms. Inside the temple, restoration and finishing work is progressing in the celestial room and original sealing rooms, which required abatement for lead-based paint. Two new baptismal fonts are also taking shape within the north addition.
