I heard an interesting prayer the other day. The person offering the invocation asked that we would be ready “to learn something new.” It struck me as both simple and ambitious, and the more I thought about it, the more it felt like a worthy daily goal.

Learning isn’t confined to classrooms or textbooks. It’s a lifelong process that shapes how we see the world and how we respond to it. Daily learning, even in small doses, keeps us curious and flexible in a time when change seems to arrive faster than the seasons. In Utah, where growth and innovation are constant, that adaptability matters. The state has one of the youngest populations in the country, and it also ranks among the fastest-growing tech hubs in the West. Staying curious helps us keep pace.

Utah Is A Natural Place For Learning

In a fast-moving society, knowledge quickly becomes outdated. Learning something new each day helps sharpen problem-solving skills and strengthens critical thinking. It builds confidence, too. Whether that knowledge comes from a conversation, a documentary, or a walk through one of Utah’s many historical sites, it all adds up. Consider that Utah is home to five national parks and more than 1,000 miles of dinosaur-bearing rock layers. Even a casual hike can turn into a geology lesson or a window into deep time.

Daily learning also supports personal growth. Reading a chapter of a book, trying a new recipe, or finally understanding how something works brings a sense of accomplishment. These moments stimulate the brain, strengthen memory, and contribute to mental well-being. They remind us that progress doesn’t have to be dramatic to be meaningful.

Learning also improves how we relate to others. Exposure to new ideas and perspectives encourages empathy and better communication. It gives us more to share and more willingness to listen. In a community-oriented state like Utah, where volunteering and civic involvement run high, that shared understanding strengthens connections.

The beauty of learning is its accessibility. A podcast during a commute, a radio interview, or a conversation with a neighbor can teach us something unexpected. Small efforts, repeated daily, quietly shape who we become.

Perhaps that prayer had it right. Asking to “learn something new” may be one of the most practical and hopeful intentions we can carry into each day.

Learning Management Skills from Mystery Science Theater 3000

In addition to old movies, MST3K would show old educational and industrial short films. Shorts about personal hygiene, selling freezers, or buying musical instruments. These films are fascinating windows into the past and are often full of good information.

One that I learned a lot from is a training film for Chevrolet sales managers, made in 1940, called Hired! It's very silly, and MST3K's jokes are spot on. But, I also learned a lot about managing people.
