Enhancing Campus Safety: SUU Welcomes 5 Skilled Police Officers
Southern Utah University (SUU) Police Department recently enhanced its team by adding two new positions and filling three vacancies, bringing five new officers into service. These officers were officially sworn in, reflecting SUU’s ongoing commitment to campus safety and inclusion.
The new officers—John Hill, Osualdo Fuentes, Kasen Lassen, Marshall Gunter, and Jacob Jackson—each bring unique skills and experience to the department. Hill, Gunter, and Lassen transferred from the Cedar City Police Department, while Fuentes and Jackson are new recruits. This strategic expansion is part of SUU’s effort to maintain a secure and supportive environment for its students and staff.
John Hill, with ten years of law enforcement experience, began his career in northern Utah and now aims to apply his expertise to benefit the SUU community. In addition to his professional role, Hill is dedicated to his family and is currently learning Latin.
Kasen Lassen, who started his career at SUU Police, has returned to the department with a renewed focus on improving and assisting others. He enjoys spending time outdoors, hunting, and being with his family.
Osualdo Fuentes, a self-motivated officer who put himself through the police academy, aspires to become an investigator. Outside of work, he helps his father with auto mechanics and cherishes time with his family.
Marshall Gunter, an SUU alum and Cedar City native, joined SUU Police to make a meaningful impact on students’ lives. His interests include mountain biking, learning defensive tactics, and prioritizing his family.
Jacob Jackson, fresh from completing his police training, is passionate about mental health and enjoys target shooting, hunting, and spending time with his wife and family.
SUU’s leadership, including President Mindy Benson and Vice President of Operations Tiger Funk, emphasize the importance of a well-equipped police force to ensure campus safety. The addition of these officers marks a significant step in providing a secure and supportive environment at SUU.
