State Prison Inmate Seeks Parole
A man convicted of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a young girl more than two decades ago is again seeking parole. Terrance Scott Gallegos was convicted in 2003 of kidnapping and sodomy on a child and was sentenced to term of 15 years to life in the Utah State Prison. The inmate went before the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole for a second time this week. Gallegos is now 54 and goes by the name Terra, identifying as a transgender woman. Gallegos told the board that a struggle with gender identity in combination with a strong drug addiction led to committing the "heinous" crime against the pre-teen who was delivering newspapers. She was taken, bound, gagged and blindfolded before the assault. Gallegos claims to have undergone treatment and counseling and has learned empathy. The full five-member parole board will decide whether to grant the requested parole.
Locations Selected For Homeless Shelter Consideration
Five potential locations in Salt Lake City are now under consideration for a new homeless facility that will have about twelve hundred emergency shelter beds. Officials say the possible sites are listed on a Utah Office of Homeless Services memo that surfaced late in October. That list also contained two locations that were later determined to be unsuitable. The remaining sites are the Lee Kay Conservation Center, the Standlee Warehouse, the Salt Lake County Oxbow Jail site, several parcels in the Beck Street area and a location at on South Bacchus Highway. Officials are still in the process of actively evaluating locations. The search is not limited to Salt Lake County and could include sites along the Wasatch Front. The Utah Legislature allocated 25-million dollars in 2023 session for a new 600- to 800-bed emergency homeless shelter.
Two Arrested In Tooele County For Drug Trafficking
Two men are under arrest on multiple felony charges related to drug trafficking. Tooele County Sheriff's Office deputies say Timothy Barfield and Caleb Graham were taken into custody yesterday after a high speed vehicle chase that involved help from the FBI and the Utah Highway Patrol. Troopers say they saw Graham, who was a passenger in the car driven by Barfield, toss out a backpack. Both men were later apprehended after police stopped the car using spikes. The backpack was found on the highway and a search produced fentanyl powder, six thousand fentanyl pills, meth, cocaine and other drugs.
