You may have clicked on this because you thought I was going to advocate for a shift in our political leanings here in Utah. Hardly. No, it's another shift to the left that I want to talk about.

They say every dog has its day, and perhaps August 13th is mine. You see, that date is National Left Handers Day, and, in that regard, I am a lefty.

Although I have a question about that. Is it strictly the hand you use to write that determines of you're left or right handed? If that is the case, solid lefty here. However, after that I'm kind of a mixed bag. Bowling? Left handed. Throwing (like a baseball), right handed. Batting also right handed. Eating? Mostly left handed. Golfing (what little I did), right handed, so I'm all over the road.

But I claim, with pride I might add, to be left handed. So excuse me while I bask in the glory of lefthandedness for the day.

National Left-Handers Day is a day dedicated to acknowledging and appreciating the unique challenges and contributions of left-handed individuals. Established in 1992 by the Left-Handers Club, this day aims to raise awareness about the everyday difficulties faced by left-handers in a world predominantly designed for right-handed people.

Left-handers, who make up about 10% of the global population, often encounter various obstacles, from using basic tools like scissors and can openers to navigating computer keyboards and musical instruments. Many everyday objects are tailored for right-handers, making simple tasks more complex for left-handers. However, some right minded thinkers have put together a website where left handed people can get products suited to them.

National Left-Handers Day serves as a reminder of these challenges and encourages manufacturers to create more inclusive designs. Beyond raising awareness, the day also celebrates the unique strengths of left-handed individuals. Studies suggest that left-handers may excel in creative and visual-spatial tasks, possibly due to the dominance of the right hemisphere of the brain. Many renowned left-handed individuals, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, and Jimi Hendrix, have made significant contributions to art, science, and music, highlighting the potential advantages of being left-handed.

National Left-Handers Day is an opportunity for left-handers to connect, share their experiences, and take pride in their uniqueness. Events and activities held on this day often include left-handed games and challenges that give right-handers a taste of what it’s like to live in a left-handed world.

So, my fellow lefties, today is the day for us all to high five with each other, of course using our left hands. And yes, I know what the church hymn says to choose, but forgive me if for this one day if I choose the left.
