Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah continues to make a lasting impact by providing affordable housing and home repairs for families in need. The organization is focused on addressing the housing challenges faced by low-income residents in the region through homeownership opportunities and community support initiatives.

Krista Longhurst, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity, Southern Utah, and Deidre Heroux joined us on the radio recently to discuss the services offered by Habitat for Humanity in our area, and the increasing need for those services.

Longhurst emphasized Habitat’s mission to create long-term housing solutions for families struggling to find stable, affordable homes. “We don’t just build houses—we build hope,” Longhurst said. “Our goal is to help families achieve the dream of homeownership while keeping housing costs manageable.”

One of the key aspects of Habitat for Humanity’s approach is its partnership model. Families selected for the program contribute “sweat equity” by working on the construction of their own homes alongside volunteers and skilled workers. In return, they receive an affordable mortgage, ensuring long-term financial stability.

Beyond new home construction, Habitat for Humanity provides critical home repair services for homeowners in need. Deidre Heroux, who works closely with community outreach, highlighted the importance of these repair projects. “A lot of families in our area are not only struggling to afford housing but also to maintain the homes they already own,” Heroux explained. “Through our repair program, we help with accessibility modifications, safety improvements, and essential renovations that keep families in their homes.”

In addition to its housing initiatives, Habitat for Humanity operates a ReStore in Cedar City and in Hurricane, where donated home goods, furniture, and building materials are sold at discounted prices. Proceeds from the store go directly toward funding new home builds and repair projects in the community.

As the need for affordable housing continues to grow, Habitat for Humanity of Southwest Utah remains committed to expanding its efforts. “It’s not just about shelter,” Longhurst said. “It’s about stability, security, and a brighter future for the families we serve.”Residents interested in volunteering, donating, or learning more about Habitat’s programs can visit their local ReStore or explore opportunities on the organization’s website.
