Cedar City Celebrates Strong Wins In Recent Local Elections
Preliminary results released on election night show strong returns in Cedar City and Parowan and partial reporting across other Iron County municipalities. Cedar City’s mayoral contest was dominated by Steve Nelson, who captured nearly 60% of the vote (59.44%).
Cedar City’s council contest likewise showed clear leaders in the night-of returns, with R. Scott Phillips being re-elected to the City Council. Political newcomer Waldo Galan was the other top vote getter in the election.
Turnout in many Cedar City precincts ranged from roughly the high teens into the 40s percent, depending on the precinct.
Parowan Voters Give Halterman Another Term
In Parowan, the unofficial precinct reports show incumbent Mollie Halterman leading the mayoral race by a wide margin (roughly 79.8% in the precinct reports), while several candidates split the two available city-council seats with Lyle Clayton Barton, Rochell Topham, Jennelle Zajac and Sharon Downey appearing among the top tallies in precinct returns. Overall Parowan reported turnout near the mid-40s to high-40s percent in its precincts.
Two races for mayor in Iron County remain too close to determine a winner based on the preliminary results. In Enoch, only nine votes separated candidates Katherine Ross and Jim Rushton, with Rushton holding that nine vote lead.
Things are even closer in the race for Paragonah Town Mayor where only six votes separate Dakota Veater and Richard Robinson with Veater holding the edge.
In other races through out the county, the mayor's race in Brian Head town was unopposed with Claton Caloway elected. In the Town Council race in Brian Head, only one candidate was on the ballot with two openings on the council. Mitchell Ricks was the candidate on the ballot, and write in candidate Logan Cruz will both serve on the town council.

County notices remind voters these are unofficial night-of totals and that the official canvass and certification will follow (county canvass scheduled per the county’s election notice). Readers should expect final, certified tallies after post-election audit and canvass.
