Back in the summer of 2024 the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints announced that Brigham Young University would create a medical school. It's been more than two years since then and you may wonder what progress has been made.

Site Selection and Leadership: Building the Foundation

Since then the location of the school has been determined in the old Provo High School site that is near Utah Valley Hospital. A dean has been selected and they have begun the process of accreditation.

The University has been pretty quiet since these initial announcements. There is a reason for this. As part of the accreditation process they can't solicit students to the program in any way. This is a touchy business and BYU has to be careful what they publish.

Navigating Accreditation: A Sensitive Process

The goal is to have the first class begin their studies in 2027. This will be capped at 60 students. The accreditation process won't be complete until this first class graduates in 2031. So this application process will progress slowly in stages.

You can find a more detailed rundown of where things stand on this Provo news site. The medical school will be a slow build over several years. Right now it is still listed as a candidate for a medical program.

When it is finally up and running its focus will be on global humanitarian health. They will not build a new hospital, but will work with Intermountain Health Care and specifically with their Utah Valley Hospital which will be used for clinical training.
