If you are looking for a chance to stare at the night sky with the upcoming meteor shower and all the different kinds of moons, Utah is a pretty good place to do it. Action did the math and figured out where the beehive state stands for night sky viewing.

Mountains Put You Closer to the Heavens

The top 10 list for night viewing are almost all in the west. Not to surprising to see Alaska at the top. That is a lot of unpopulated dark sky to watch the heavens. Bonus to this state for keeping night around the clock.

Maine is the one outlier at number 7 and California was higher than Utah at number 8. They put Utah at number 10 for night time viewing in January with probable clear skies, low humidity and places wit little light pollution.

What to Look For This January

Wolf Moon: This is the first full moon of the year in January. It gets the name from people in the past saying they could hear wolves howling at it. It is usually clear and bright in the sky.

Supermoon: This would be the same as the wolf moon but will be closer to the earth and appear bigger in the sky. You can see it on January 3, 2026.

Quadrantid Meteor Shower: This is happening now until mid January, but peaks around January 3rd and 4th. If you watch it you can see up to 120 meteors streak across the sky in an hour on average.
