In a 2024 survey, 40% of men reported feeling lonely at least once a week. The epidemic of loneliness is affecting many people, but it hits men particularly hard. Utah is no exception with men experiencing what is called a “friendship recession”. 

Why Men in Utah Don’t Have Friends 

It has been a growing problem that grew worse during the pandemic. Men traditionally haven’t talked about their feelings or looked for help when they were struggling, then the world shut down and everyone became more isolated. 

Since then, there have been many studies conducted on loneliness and people’s inability to connect with others. Social media doesn’t really fill the need for real interaction. With a greater understanding of the problem, solutions are being sought.

Looking to Help with Loneliness  in Utah 

A resolution proposed by Sen. Brady Brammer submitted to the state legislature is looking to bring awareness to the problem. It would prioritize and recognize loneliness as critical for mental health. 

Other people who recognize a need in themselves and others are making their own gathering places. A young father in Utah created a site where other dads can join in playing video games after the kids go to bed. It is called dadsneedfriends.com.

In the area I live a neighbor started a “just for guys book club". The book is chosen by the group and they are more along the lines of things guys like to discuss. He also has a “just for guys game night”. Both have proved popular. 

At first, I was hesitant to participate, but I realized how much the interaction was helping me. If you are feeling you need more friends, why wait for someone else to do it? Maybe it is time to start your own group where you live.
