Where Utah Stands Out is in Blending in

If you look at a list of things popular in different states, you can almost guarantee Utah will be somewhere in the middle, quietly blending into the background. For example, in a list of the most popular pizza style in each state it says for Utah:

There isn’t a pizza style that is a state favorite.

Of course, Utah didn’t show a favorite. No need to stand out, we just like all of them. The Washington Post looked at customer reviews from each state and found Utah comments most on New York Style Pizza implying it is the favorite.

That almost sounds like we made a stand, but it turns out Utah made the same choice as 42 other states who also chose New Your Style. Not too surprising. It is the safest and most common kind of pizza in the country.

Why Does Utah Feel the Need to Blend in?

Having grown up in the beehive state, I understand this insecurity. We felt like the weird state, and I didn’t want anyone noticing any more peculiarities. For this reason, in clothes and food, and whatever else was popular, I tried to blend into the mainstream. There are a lot of Utahns who have felt the same way I did.

So, imagine my surprise when I found another list of the most requested toppings for each state and Utah didn’t pick what everyone else did. We actually chose something a little different. Here it is. We chose pineapple...sigh.

Don’t get me wrong, I love where I am from and am proud to be from Utah. I have lived in other places and loved them, but this mountain state is my home. I just wish when we do step out of the norm, like with pizza toppings, it was something better than pineapple.
