Dave has written a 3 book fantasy series called “The Demon Curse” which discovers the fantastical demon society and how they interact with the human world. I remember how curious and frankly stunned I was to see how demons treat their dead. See what you think.

Now Dave may not know that I am posting a portion of the book per week. I post an installment once a week (until I get caught) so without further ado, I give you the eleventh installment of The Demon Curse Series Book #1 entitled “Son of Ruin” written by David E. Hiatt.

Chapter 3 Establishing Order Installment 11

In all, thirty-three yearlings were summoned. The number had been decreasing the last century and this was the fewest yet. All moaned and crouched in the blood of the cauldron until each was roughly removed by the large demon with the thick arms and moved to the side next to Succubus. They all now huddled in a group next to him, looking fearfully around at the world they had entered.

Succubus watched the proceedings with curiosity. How did that big monstrosity knock me backward like that? he wondered. How did he push the air with his hand?

He could see the rock, the fire, and the demons, but he could also feel them in a way. He felt power radiating from the large brute. He felt power in the horde, but the strength of will coming from the demon Lords was overwhelming.

At last, the spokesman for the Ten, the mighty demon named Asag, rose to address the beastly assemblage from a stand behind the cauldron. “This is the end of the Summoning.” His voice was flat but clear, “Thirty-three yearlings.”

The horde roared with approval.

Then Succubus watched a demon make his way to the stand. A servant to the Ten, he was thick with long arms, and he moved using all four limbs. He was one of the Arma Deu who were used as special messengers because they could cover ground so quickly. His clothes were simple, but of the finest material. He bowed almost to the ground in respect to the Demon Lord. Leaning in close he whispered a message to Asag who inclined his head and nodded.

Turning to address the horde, Asag raised his hand and gestured to the cave high up on the cliff. “The demon Hellion, the oldest of our kind, has died,” he said in a voice void of emotion.

A hush fell on the assembled multitude.

“He will be carried to the Cave of the Dead,” Asag paused for a moment, “and there be cursed into oblivion.”

The horde roared their approval. Succubus watched a contingent of demons, assemble in a rehearsed death march, make their way to the cliff where Hellion’s body lay. They wound their way up the side of a rising outcrop, and then disappeared around the back. Succubus saw them emerge at the mouth of the cave. Gathering around, they lifted the ancient, scarred body above their heads and carried him down the winding path they had just ascended.

As they made their way to the valley floor, they were soon joined by those below. Some were roaring, others dancing maniacally, as the body of Hellion was carried along by more and more demons through the throng. The rest followed in their demonic dance across the flat plain to the Cave of the Dead.

Succubus continued to watch, taking it all in.

There you have it. The eleventh piece of the book. Let me know if you enjoyed this, want more, or anything else I can do to make it easier to read.
