Closing of Small Fuel Stop Sparks Strong Online Reaction

The Dangling Rope Marina sits in the middle of Lake Powell and has been a fueling stop for boats traveling to Rainbow Bridge and other parts of the extensive lake. It has been closed for the last couple of years due to water levels and other factors.

The National Park Service recently released a letter stating that the marina will be closed down permanently. This announcement resulted in a huge reaction from people online. Hundreds of comments poured into Facebook over the closing.

Not So Much Worry About the Marina as There is About Low Water Levels

What started as people who had actually visited Dangling Rope and would miss it turned into an emotional discussion about water use and the west. Many online commenters blamed big cities built in the desert like Las Vegas and Phoenix. Others were unhappy with water sent to California.

Some wished the Lake would be drained for environmental reasons, while others blamed the same people for wanting to make water political. The number of comments for a little-known marina shows there are strong feelings about water and the west.

What States Use the Most Colorado River Water?

California uses the most water in the lower basin of the Colorado at 58.7 % followed by Arizona with 37.3%. Surprisingly, Nevada shouldn’t take any blame as they only use 4% of the water coming down the river and stored in Lake Powell and Lake Mead.

What this discussion shows is there is not a lot of agreement on how water is used in the west. There is obviously an underlying worry and tension in people’s minds about the Colorado River and the lakes it supplies.
