Now Dave may not know that I am posting a portion of the book per week. I post an installment once a week, so without further ado, I give you the twelfth installment of The Demon Curse Series Book #1 entitled “Son of Ruin” written by David E. Hiatt.

Chapter 3 Establishing Order Installment 12

As the body of Hellion disappeared over the horizon, an older demon approached them. He was thin and marred, his neck bent, and his clothing ragged, dusty, and worn. His horns were cracked and scarred. Bushy eyebrows hung from the thick overhang of his forehead. Succubus did not feel the dominant power from this one that he felt from the other, older demons.

“My name is Bune,” he said in a low, scratchy voice. “You will follow me.”

Succubus and the other yearlings were roughly herded by Bune away from the stand and the dancing revelers.

As they went, Succubus glanced back at the Ten Demon Lords still seated on the stand near the cauldron. He noted that they were talking among themselves, all except Asag, who was gazing in Succubus’ direction thoughtfully. Then the Demon Lord’s eyes met his and for a moment his gaze seemed to drill into him, until Asag turned away dismissively. Relieved, Succubus turned quickly and followed the group.

Bune led them around a mound of piled rocks and into a barren cave. Inside, Succubus found it to be high and spacious, though he couldn’t see much as it was lit by one torch and the light flickered, leaving much of it in darkness. Timidly the thirty-three yearlings looked around and back to their guide.

“Well, yearlings,” said Bune, “welcome to the demon world. This will be your home for a while,” he gestured to the cavern around them, “until you are ready to enter the Caves of Learning.”

They were given some of the rough clothing Succubus had seen on the lesser demons. He slid on the robe and breeches, glancing at those around him to see if he were wearing it correctly. Satisfied that they were properly outfitted, Bune gestured to the sides of the cavern where there were carved out slabs in the rock. “There’s where you will sleep,”

And with that brief explanation, he left.

Succubus looked at those with him in the cave.

This is a scrawny looking bunch, he thought.

Most were huddled by themselves, trying to comprehend what had just happened to them. Not all though. Some were also gazing around the cave, sizing up the others.

A short time later, Bune returned and tossed a bag toward them, made of the same rough material. When it hit the rock surface, it spilled its contents of brown, gnarled roots onto the floor. Succubus retrieved one, inspected it for a moment, and bit into it. The root was crunchy with a sharp bitter taste. The pulp was moist and, as he swallowed it, he found it relaxed the gnawing feeling in his stomach, so he continued to chew through the bitterness.

There you have it. The twelfth piece of the book. Let me know if you enjoyed this, want more, or anything else I can do to make it easier to read.
