See The Most Underappreciated Event in Cedar City’s Livestock Festival
There are two events in Cedar City that will take place towards the end of October that will make you appreciate the majesty of this earth's animal residents. This includes the annual Sheep Parade and the underappreciated Stock Dog Demonstration.
Experience the Cedar Livestock & Heritage Festival
Every year Cedar City pays homage to those who went before with the Cedar Livestock & Heritage Festival. It takes places Friday to Sunday October 23 through 25. There are a whole bunch of events, but I want to focus on these two.
If you love animals, you should put these on your schedule. For me it is like seeing a magnificent sunset or standing on a mountain peak when I feel inspired by God's creations.
See the Sheep Parade: A Surprisingly Moving Experience
The first time I watched the Sheep Parade, it caught me off guard. Main St. was crowded with people watching the floats and horses. It was fun and noisy. Then from a few blocks up, I heard a hush fall on the crowd.
Quickly that hush continued down the road to me and I saw this wall of sheep moving almost in formation down the road towards me. The only sound was the sheep's hoofs on the blacktop and the occasional yip of the men following on their horses.
Unveiling the Stock Dog Demonstration
It was surprisingly inspiring to see. I could feel history moving past and those sheep were almost majestic as they quietly moved along. The other event that inspired me during the festival had a lot less witnesses.
This was the Stock Dog Demonstration that will take place on Friday October 3, 4:30 pm at the Iron Rangers Arena. This is where stock dogs show off their skills herding cattle. You watch as the dog skillfully moves the young calves around the arena.

To me it is inspiring to watch these animals work. There aren't many who attend this part of the festival, but I think it is a missed opportunity. If you have children who love animals, these will be some highlight memories.
