Should You Try These 5 Easy Ways To Make Your Utah Room Pop Like A Movie Set?
I was watching the trailer for "The Gorge", which turns out has very little to do with the Virgin River Gorge to my disappointment and disbelief, but I was impressed with some of the set designs. It is the same with most movies, they can take something as plain and cold as a concrete bunker and make it look cozy and inviting.
Have you ever wished you could apply some of these tricks to your favorite room to make it cozier? I had an opportunity to work with a few directors when I was in my young career and learned a few easy things that you can do to cozy up a room like the professionals do. Here are 5 tips:
1-Statement Lighting: Lights can really add pop to a room. I noticed a nice yellow glow in the background of one of the bunkers in "The Gorge", which surprisingly does not even mention the Virgin River Gorge. Add depth to your bookcase with a small lamp. Look for unique lighting fixtures like a chandelier, pendant lights, or LED strips. Don’t ignore the power of reflective light, it softly warms up a room.

2-Bold Color Accents: You know when you are in the Virgin River Gorge and you catch a glimpse of the river especially when it is reflecting the blue sky? Wow that is so pretty and could have been used in a movie, but I digress. Don’t be afraid of a splash of color like that —be bold with a colorful pillow or piece of furniture and watch your room come alive.
3-Layered Textures: Combine different textures—a faux fur throw, an interesting rug, or wooden accents—to add depth and interest to the space. Even in this office you have a hugging leather chair to compliment the flat wood walls. Notice the American flag pops some color in there.
4-Unique Props or Decor: I love a room that hosts a standout piece like a vintage suitcase, a decorative mirror, or even film-inspired items (like a director's chair from the movie "The Gorge" which is not about that cool drive from St. George to Beaver Dam) to reflect your personality and elevate the atmosphere. Even here this cute snowman acts like a conversation piece in the shot.
5-Thematic Artwork: This is somewhat like the props and decor tip. Oversized art or photography work well, even a movie poster (especially if it's The Gorge) can draw the eye and offer you to explain that this movie had nothing to do with the Gorge on I-15 to your fascinated guest who will be impressed with your insight.
There you go: Warming up your room is as easy as driving the gorge on an afternoon cruise, unless you are in a hurry or traffic is bad or even worse if it's the scary gorge in the movie which honestly has nothing to do with the Virgin River Gorge. Did I mention that earlier?
