Fully autonomous cars are slowly creeping across the country not just for ownership but for ride services.

If you want to embrace the new trend but are not ready to hand over the controls to a robot you might be interested in a new ride service available in Las Vegas that offers something different: a remote-driven limo-style service that sits halfway between rideshare and rental car.

Vay Limo Service: A New Middle Ground Between Rideshare and Autonomy

A Berlin-based company called Vay is introducing a ride that is not automated but driven remotely. Picture a room set up like the old-style driver's education simulators, but with more cameras that feed real-time video to the remote driver sitting in a room instead of the car. That driver gets you the car and then you drive it to your destination.

How Vay Works

- Customers order a car through the Vay app.
- A remote driver, sitting in a control center with a video game–like rig and 360° camera feeds, pilots the empty car to the customer.
- Once the car arrives, the customer drives themselves to their destination.
- When finished, the remote driver takes over again, returning the vehicle or sending it to the next rider.

This system is called “teledriving”. Unlike autonomous vehicles, which rely entirely on AI and sensors, Vay’s cars are always under human control—just not from inside the vehicle.

How Teledriving Differs from Self-Driving Options

- Human oversight vs. full autonomy: Self-driving robotaxis operate without human drivers, raising safety and trust concerns after several high-profile incidents. Vay keeps a human in the loop, offering reassurance and flexibility.
- Customer participation: With Vay, you actually drive the car yourself once it arrives. Robotaxis, by contrast, chauffeur you from point A to B without you touching the wheel.
- Bridge technology: Vay positions itself as a “bridge” between today’s ride-hailing and tomorrow’s autonomy, combining the efficiency of driverless delivery with the comfort of human oversight.

Impact on Nevada Rideshare Customers

Vay claims to be half the price of traditional rideshare services. For budget-conscious locals and tourists, this could be a game-changer. Also, customers can make multiple stops, park, and run errands.

We will have to see if Vay is a replacement option or just a step toward fully autonomous rideshares, but in the meantime, it might be something to try if you are still uneasy about robots driving you to the mall.
