Can we please start saying “please” again, Utah?
Right off the bat, it’s easy to see why “please” is being used less often. In the sentence above, it sounds a bit bitey and patronizing.

What happened to the magic word? When did it go bad, and can Utah reclaim it?

Here are a few reasons the word "please" fell out of favor in Utah.

"Please" started being used as a way to get someone to do something they didn’t plan on or felt uncomfortable doing. Think of phrases like:

“Will you please scoot your chair in so I can get around you easier?”

“Mom, please can we have some ice cream before dinner?”

"Please" has transformed into a sarcastic way to vent frustration.

“Oh, please, like I really asked you to do so much.”

"Would you please stop making that sound?"

Often, "please" is reserved for when it’s really needed, signaling that the request is going to be difficult.

“Can you please help me find a solution to the toxic culture in your department?”

“Officer, please help us find our missing pet lobster.”

So, does using "please" less mean Utah is colder, more intolerant, and less polite? Not necessarily. We have other words that convey the same politeness without the negatives mentioned above. Think of how you soften a request: you might use phrases like “would you mind,” “when you have time,” or “if it isn’t too much trouble.”

While "please" redefines itself, would you please take a moment to consider how Utah is still polite. We might be saying “please” less, but we’re finding new ways to keep our conversations courteous.

LOOK: Cool Car Features We Kind of Miss

Kids these days don't know what they're missing out on! But hey, let's be real, some of those old car features were pretty awesome. Yeah, they might've been a bit risky and even tried to kill us, but they made our rides feel way cooler.
