Two things, in my experience, are true about Utahns and health routines. First, we are adamant about staying healthy and setting up a regular weekly workout regimen, and second, we are so busy that we’re often frustrated when we can’t keep up with the first goal.

There’s good news, though, for those of us who only manage a big hike or muscle-building session on the weekend. A recent study shows that being a "weekend warrior" might not be such a bad thing.

If you’re struggling to squeeze in your regular workouts during the week, don’t worry! Pushing yourself over the weekend can be just as effective. The study found that one big exertion session on the weekend is just as beneficial, in terms of mortality rate, as spreading out 30 minutes daily exercise sessions throughout the week.

Sure, in an ideal world, we’d all exercise regularly. But if that's not happening, don’t give up! Load up your weekends with activities that get you moving. We are pretty good about using weekends to get out there—think of those hikes, pickleball games, bike rides, or even yard work. Is there a way you can push those into a heart-moving exercise fest your body craves.

How do you know if you’ve pushed yourself far enough? Personally, I gauge it by my breathing—when I reach that point where my breath is strained beyond its usual rhythm, I know I’ve pushed myself. That deep, labored breathing feels like a sign I’ve accomplished something. What about you? Do warm muscles, the urge to stretch, or maybe a mental checkpoint tells you when you've hit your goal?

So, don’t get discouraged, Utah! Many of us already use our weekends to push ourselves physically, and it turns out that might be enough to live the quality life we're all dreaming of. Keep up those weekend warrior vibes—you’re doing great!
