This is How to Know When to Stop Mowing Your Lawn in Utah
How do you know when to stop mowing your lawn as fall moves towards winter. It is sooner than you might think and doing it right will give you a healthy lawn next spring. Here’s some tips to get your lawn ready and winterized.
Less Water Now Will Sink the Roots
It is the time of year when you can begin encouraging your grass into a dormant state. This will protect it when the frost hits in the higher elevations of Southern Utah. Even in the warmer areas like Washington County, dormancy protects your lawn.
Cutting down on watering as the temperature cools saves water and will send the roots deeper. The Water Conservancy recommends watering three times a week in September and October.
How to Know When to Stop Mowing
When it comes to mowing, the magic number is 50 degrees. You don’t want to mow after the first frost and stopping when the temperature hits 50 is a good way to gauge it. Don’t scalp the lawn either as it will damage the plant going into winter harshness.
If you really want it to pop come springtime, lay down some winter fertilizer in early fall. This is designed to slowly release, and you can do it every other week for a month or two. When the weather warms, this fertilizer will feed the reviving roots.
