Park City has long been one of Utah’s crown jewels, attracting visitors from around the world with its famous ski slopes, historic Main Street, and spectacular mountain scenery. Now the community has earned another distinction: it has been named the best mountain town in America by Outside magazine.

In its latest ranking of the nation’s top mountain towns, Outside placed Park City at the very top of the list, ahead of well-known outdoor destinations including Jackson, Wyoming; Telluride, Colorado; Truckee, California; and Bend, Oregon. The ranking considered a variety of factors, including access to outdoor recreation, quality of life, local culture, dining, and opportunities for adventure throughout the year.

Much More Than Winter Activities

What helped Park City rise above the competition is the remarkable variety of experiences available within a relatively compact area. While many people know the town as a world-class winter destination, its appeal extends far beyond ski season. The community boasts roughly 450 miles of trails that welcome hikers, runners, and mountain bikers. Anglers can find excellent fishing opportunities nearby, while outdoor enthusiasts can explore alpine lakes, forests, and mountain vistas throughout the surrounding Wasatch Range.

Outside also highlighted Park City’s reputation as a premier mountain biking destination. The town is one of only a handful of communities to receive a gold-level Ride Center designation from the International Mountain Bicycling Association, an honor recognizing exceptional trail systems and riding experiences. For cyclists, Park City has become a bucket-list destination rivaling some of the best biking communities in North America.

Of course, outdoor recreation is only part of the story. The town’s vibrant downtown district offers an impressive collection of restaurants, shops, galleries, and entertainment venues. Visitors can spend a morning on the trails and an evening enjoying fine dining or live music, creating a balance that many mountain communities strive to achieve.

The recognition is also a testament to Utah’s growing reputation as an outdoor recreation powerhouse. From the red-rock landscapes of southern Utah to the high peaks of the Wasatch Mountains, the state offers an abundance of opportunities for adventure. Park City, however, stands at the center of that reputation, combining natural beauty, recreational access, and community character in a way that captured the attention of Outside’s editors.
