Porch Pirates In Utah? Tips To Protect Your Packages
I have a friend who works for one of the package delivery companies here in southern Utah, and he is already bracing for the next few months. Like it or not, the holidays are on the way, and along with that comes the increase on packages being shipped to and arriving from loved one.
Sadly, it also brings along a problem that is on the rise here in Utah: Porch Pirates. With deliveries going on through out the day, and more and more houses with no one home during the workday, packages left at the front door are becoming more of a target in the Beehive State.
So what can you do to protect yourself from this? Here's a few ideas.
First, consider alternative delivery options. Many carriers offer to deliver packages to secure locations, such as a back porch or a side entrance. You can also have items delivered to a work address or a neighbor’s house if they’ll be home during the day. Some retailers provide the option to deliver to locker systems or pickup locations, adding another layer of security.
If you're buying from a seller that has a local retail operation, consider having your package shipped to the in-store location instead of to your home.
Installing a doorbell camera or security system is another strong deterrent. Visible security cameras can make your home a less attractive target for thieves, as they may be caught on video. Many doorbell cameras allow you to monitor deliveries in real-time and communicate with delivery personnel remotely.
If your shipper offers a “signature required” option, consider using that, especially for higher valued items. In this case your packages should not be left alone.
Smart locks and package lockboxes are other solutions to consider. These can be installed near your front door, allowing delivery drivers to securely leave packages. Lockboxes require a code or key to access, ensuring only authorized people can retrieve your deliveries.
Another option you can consider is to have your packages delivered to your workplace. This can also keep your packages from being left alone. Plus you have the added benefit of having a place to hide your packages from the prying eyes that may be snooping around your house.
Be sure to track your packages so you know when to expect them. Most retailers and shipping services provide real-time tracking updates via apps or text messages, allowing you to pick up packages promptly. If you're going to be away when a delivery is scheduled, you can often reschedule the drop-off or request that it be held at a nearby location for pickup.
Most porch pirate activities occur between 6AM and 6PM, so if you take a lunch break and go home, or have a workday that ends a little early, be sure to bring your packages in as soon as you can, or if you have a trusted neighbor, ask them to bring them in to their home and pick them up when you get home.

By using these strategies, you can reduce the risk of falling prey to the porch pirates and keep your deliveries safe.
