Three candidates vying for the Presidential nomination of the Libertarian Party will meet for a debate next week in Salt Lake City. Former police officer Mike ter Maat, tech entrepreneur Lars Mapstead and ear, nose and throat doctor Charles Ballay will take the stage at the DoubleTree Hotel at the Salt Lake City International Airport at 6:30 p.m. on April 19th. The event will be hosted by the Utah Libertarian Party which will hold its national convention in Washington, D.C., over Memorial Day weekend.
Cedar City Man Going To Prison For Murder For Hire Plot
A Cedar City man is heading to prison after pleading guilty in a murder-for-hire scheme. Christopher Pence was sentenced Friday to seven years in federal prison on a count of use of interstate commerce facilities in the commission of a murder-for-hire plot. Prosecutors say the 43-year-old got on the dark web in 2021 and arranged for the murder of two people in eastern New York. He had planned to pay in Bitcoin for the individuals to be killed. Pence's plan was seen by the FBI and he was taken into custody later that year in Washington County before anyone was hurt.
Church Will Build 15 New Temples
President Russel M of the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints announced plans for 15 new temples during the final day of the April 2024 general conference on Sunday. The 15 different temples will be built in several different countries, though two of them will be in Utah. The Church says the planned Edinburgh temple will be the first Latter-day Saint temple in Scotland, while the Des Moines temple will be the first in Iowa. The LDS Church holds its general conference twice a year, first in April, then again in October.
Many In Utah View Partial Solar Eclipse
Across Utah on Monday, people went outdoors to get a glimpse of the last eclipse of its kind to affect North America until 2044. While not in the path of totality, residents of the Beehive State witnessed a 50 percent partial solar eclipse. The eclipse was visible, weather-permitting from a diagonal swath of the country from Texas to Maine.
One Injured In Rollover Crash In Ivins
Investigators say one person was hurt in a rollover crash in Washington County late on Sunday. Police say first responders had to extricate the driver from the vehicle on Old Highway 191 in the Ivins area just before 10:20 p.m. Santa Clara-Ivins Fire and Rescue says the driver was transported to the hospital but did not released additional information.
