Southwest Technical College Introduces “Empower You” Program
Southwest Technical College in Cedar City is introducing the Empower You program, a life skills training initiative designed to help individuals improve their circumstances through education and skill development. The program, which began in February, is funded by a generous community donor and offers participants scholarships for further training at Southwest Tech upon completing its ten-course series.
Jodi Simmons, Community Relations Support Specialist at Southwest Technical College, waas on the radio with us and explained, “A donor from the community noticed employees stuck in their life circumstances and wanted to create a course to teach basic life skills and provide access to education.” Participants who complete at least five classes earn a half-price scholarship for any Southwest Tech program, while those completing all ten classes receive a full scholarship.
The program’s classes cover a range of essential skills, from automotive basics and home maintenance to cooking, first aid, and job preparation. “We want to help people feel comfortable stepping back into education or the workforce,” Simmons said. The final sessions include job preparation and community connections, helping participants with résumés, job interviews, and linking them to local resources like the Family Support Center and the Department of Workforce Services.
Simmons emphasized the program’s supportive environment, saying, “We’re hoping for a good cohort of people looking for new opportunities who can support each other in their goals.” Participants also receive meal vouchers to experience the campus’s culinary program and familiarize themselves with Southwest Tech’s offerings.
Though currently a pilot, Simmons expressed optimism about the program’s future, noting interest from other groups in replicating the initiative. “This is a great opportunity, and we’re excited to see it grow,” she added.
