A new national ranking of college towns for 2026 suggests that today’s students are looking beyond the traditional image of campus life and instead placing a premium on balance, affordability, and overall quality of life. The report, compiled by RentCafe, evaluated more than 200 college towns across the country using factors such as cost of living, academic outcomes, and livability.

Topping the list once again is Bozeman, Montana, which held onto the number one spot for the third consecutive year. It is joined in the top ten by several other western communities, including Pullman, Washington; Laramie, Wyoming; Moscow, Idaho; and Provo, Utah. In fact, half of the top ten towns are located in the western United States, highlighting a growing trend that favors smaller, outdoor-oriented communities over larger metropolitan areas.

The rankings reflect a shift in priorities among college students, particularly those in Generation Z. While academics remain important, factors such as access to recreation, clean air, and a strong sense of community are playing a larger role in where students choose to enroll. Many of the highest-ranked towns are known for their proximity to mountains, trails, and other natural amenities, offering students opportunities to maintain a healthy balance between school and personal life.

Affordability Key Factor In Decision

Affordability also continues to be a key factor. Towns that combine relatively low tuition with manageable housing and living costs tend to perform well in the rankings. This helps explain why smaller college towns often outpace larger cities, where expenses can quickly add up.

Provo’s appearance at number six on the list is particularly notable. While the city is not typically associated with a vibrant party scene and often ranks low on lists of “party schools,” it appears to excel in areas that matter more to many students and families. Strong academic outcomes, a high percentage of young residents, and access to outdoor recreation all contribute to its appeal. The ranking suggests that a quieter social environment may actually be a strength rather than a drawback for students focused on long-term success.
