SUU Announces Founders Week Celebration
There's going to be a birthday celebration coming up next week, and it's one that Southern Utah University hopes members of the campus and the community will participate in. Each March, the university has a week long celebration known as Founders Week. The celebration is set to begin on Monday, March 24th.
The week long celebration and tribute keeps the remarkable story of the founding of SUU in the mindset of students and the community. If you've never seen it, the university produced a docudrama about the founding of the school called Back Up The Mountain. The production chronicles the sacrifices and determination of those committed to establish the Branch Normal School in Cedar City. You can see the production by clicking here.
For this year, there will be events happening all week long. Each day of the week will feature a campus scavenger hunt where participants will be invited to Catch Carter. In this case it's Carter Carillon, and replicas of the Carillon Bell Tower will be placed around the school, those who find the replicas will be able to win prizes.
The SUU Birthday Party will be held on Monday, March 24th in the Dining Hall. Earlier in the day, they will be unveiling new plaque at the Mountain Center.
The week will also feature lectures, demonstrations, more dining opportunities, and contests to test your skills.
The on Friday, March 28th, SUU will host the Founders Banquet. The banquet will be held in the Gilbert Great Hall in the Hunter Alumni Center. Terri Hartley and Lee Byers will be honored with the Distinguished Service Award at that banquet.
Perhaps the crowning event of the celebration will be the Day of Service set for Saturday, March 29th. According to a press release, the Day of Service is designed to be a
Unique opportunity to demonstrate the University’s commitment to its community, echoing the spirit of SUU’s founders.
Hundreds of red-shirted volunteers will spend the day cleaning, painting, collecting food donations and other activities to contribute to the community.
