SUU Polynesian Showcase This Weekend
The Pacific Islander Student Association (PISA) at Southern Utah University is excited to present its Annual Polynesian Showcase, running from February 27 to March 1 at 6 PM in the SUU Auditorium Theatre. This year’s showcase, titled Gatekeepers of Oceania: Island Love, promises an evening filled with dance, music, and storytelling, celebrating the diverse cultures of the Pacific Islands.

The showcase follows the journey of six Polynesian siblings—Tonga, Samoa, Hawai’i, Tahiti, Fiji, and New Zealand—who are chosen as Gatekeepers of Oceania. Tasked with spreading "island love" across the Pacific, each sibling represents a unique form of love, symbolizing the unity of their cultures. The story, created by PISA President Brenna Jane Fangupo, begins on the shores of Hawai’i, where Aloha turns jealousy into a joyful dance of forgiveness. In Tahiti, Hērē mends tensions between clans through shared stories, while in Fiji, Loloma fosters compassion among villagers. Tonga’s Festival of Love encourages unity, New Zealand helps an elder rediscover faith in love, and Samoa brings the journey to a heartwarming close with a Feast of Community. As the siblings return to their celestial home, they leave behind a glowing symbol of love, a beacon of unity that continues to inspire future generations.
The success of this event is made possible through the leadership of Tevita Sekeni, Director of Pacific Region Operations for SUU International Affairs, and Noaese Taeatafa, Academic Advisor for the College of Engineering & Computational Sciences. The 2024-25 Showcase Committee, including Alexis Taeatafa, Autumn Aiono-Fuimaono, Joseph Vaa’ivaka, Larry Ursua, Mele Palu, and Sosaia Sekeni, has worked tirelessly to ensure cultural authenticity and a seamless production.
Additionally, cultural choreography has been guided by dedicated Kumu, who have brought expertise and tradition to each performance. Their contributions have been instrumental in capturing the essence of Polynesian heritage.
Tickets for the showcase can be purchased via Venmo (@cedarcitypisa) or at the door. Admission is $10 for general entry, $7 for students with ID, and $5 for children under 12. This immersive cultural event is not to be missed!
