A new survey from Talker Research has reignited one of America’s favorite low-stakes arguments: which state has the best food. Based on responses from 5,000 Americans nationwide, the answer, at least according to public opinion, is California. The Golden State topped the list thanks to its reputation for diverse cuisine, fresh ingredients and the ability to serve everything from high-end dining to excellent tacos out of a truck parked on a side street.

California was followed closely by New York, Texas, Louisiana and Florida, a lineup that reads like a culinary greatest-hits album. New York earned points for pizza and bagels that residents insist are impossible to replicate elsewhere. Texas rode its barbecue and Tex-Mex credentials. Louisiana’s Cajun and Creole cooking inspired the strongest local loyalty, with residents nearly unanimous in declaring their home state the best place to eat in America. Florida rounded out the top five with its mix of seafood, Caribbean influences and comfort food.

And What About Utah?

Then there’s Utah, which landed near the bottom of the list, keeping company with states better known for scenic drives than standout dining. While Utahns may bristle at the ranking, the foods respondents most often associated with the state didn’t do it many favors. Jell-O salad, fry sauce and funeral potatoes were cited as Utah’s defining dishes, which is charming in a church-basement-potluck way but not exactly intimidating to the rest of the country’s taste buds.

The contrast becomes sharper when Utah is compared to its neighbors. California, just to the west, took the top spot overall. To the south, Arizona’s Southwestern flavors and Mexican influences give it a clearer culinary identity. Colorado benefits from a growing food scene built around local ingredients and craft dining, while Nevada’s reputation is buoyed by Las Vegas, where celebrity chefs treat restaurants like competitive sports. Even Idaho leans into hearty comfort foods with fewer gelatin molds involved.

The Talker Research survey is based on perception rather than restaurant data or chef awards, which makes Utah’s placement less an indictment and more a reflection of its public image. Still, the results suggest that while Utah excels at many things, convincing the rest of the country that lime-green Jell-O with carrots is cuisine may be a tougher sell.
