Unveiling ‘Salt Lines': Art Exhibition At Southern Utah Museum Of Art
The Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA) will present Salt Lines: Exploring Climate, Environment, and the Saline Influx, an innovative exhibition that delves into salt’s role in both local and global ecosystems, particularly in the context of climate change. Opening on October 19, 2024, and running through March 8, 2025, this exhibit invites visitors to engage with art and ideas about salt as both a life-sustaining mineral and an environmental concern.
The exhibition’s opening reception will take place on Friday, October 18, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The event will begin with public readings from local poets Natalie Young and Danielle Dubrasky, alongside artist Alexandra Fuller. These readings, in partnership with the Southern Utah Book Festival, will focus on themes of environment and the human connection to a shifting landscape. The reception will also feature refreshments and interactive components for all ages.
Salt Lines showcases salt as a marker of environmental crisis and a symbol of cultural connection. Dr. Rebecca Bloom, SUMA’s Director of Curatorial Affairs, explained in a news release, “The exhibition explores salt and how it binds us. It’s in our bodies, in our environment. It permeates our lives in more ways than we know.”
A central highlight of the exhibit includes two immersive installations by London-based multimedia artists Himali Singh Soin and David Soin Tappeser, collectively known as Hylozoic/Desires. Their installations, Namak Nazar and Piscean Premonition, explore salt’s significance through themes of climate crisis and environmental redemption.
Photographic works by David Maisel and Alexandra Fuller anchor the exhibit, focusing on the Great Salt Lake. Their images underscore the local implications of environmental degradation, bringing attention to this critical Utah landmark.

Salt Lines invites visitors to explore how art, storytelling, and environmental consciousness intersect, creating a rich space for reflection and conversation.
