As spring blooms across southern Utah, nature enthusiasts have an exciting reason to explore the region: the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is set to host its inaugural desert tortoise viewing event. Scheduled for April 27 at the Chuckwalla Trail Head in Snow Canyon State Park, this event promises an up-close encounter with one of the area's most fascinating inhabitants: the Mojave desert tortoise.

The Mojave desert tortoise, a distinct species from its Sonoran cousin, inhabits vast stretches of southwestern Utah, along with parts of southern Nevada, southeastern California, and western Arizona. However, despite its widespread range, the Mojave desert tortoise faces significant conservation challenges. Designated as threatened under the Endangered Species Act since 1990, these tortoises are safeguarded by stringent federal and state laws. In Utah, it is strictly prohibited to collect, remove, or transport desert tortoises without proper certification.

Adam Kavalunas, DWR Southern Region Outreach Manager, emphasizes the vulnerability of desert tortoise populations to habitat loss and degradation. Despite their impressive lifespan of 50 to 80 years, these tortoises face obstacles to reproduction, with a lengthy 13 to 20 years until reaching maturity and low reproductive rates. Furthermore, their offspring often fall prey to predators, highlighting the delicate balance of their ecosystem.

During the viewing event, biologists will offer insights into the natural history and behavior of desert tortoises. Attendees will have the opportunity to observe a live tortoise up close and learn about its habitat preferences, dietary habits, and reproductive strategies. While admission to the event is free, pre-registration on Eventbrite is encouraged, with attendees receiving a parking pass in lieu of the Snow Canyon State Park entrance fee.
