Utah Advisory: New ORV Rules In Effect At Glen Canyon National Recreation Area
The National Park Service (NPS) has announced updates to off-road vehicle (ORV) regulations in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, aimed at improving the management of motorized recreation and preserving the area's natural integrity. These adjustments affect about 24 miles of park roads, leaving 388 miles available for a mix of motorized and non-motorized activities.
Key changes include the prohibition of ORVs and street-legal all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) on an eight-mile section of the Poison Spring Loop, stretching along Route 633 north to Route 730. Additionally, the superintendent’s authority to permit ORVs and street-legal ATVs on the upper portion of the Flint Trail has been removed. These modifications reflect the park's ongoing effort to balance recreational use with environmental stewardship in sensitive areas, particularly within the Orange Cliffs Special Management Unit.
Beyond road restrictions, the new rule establishes stricter quiet hours for the Lone Rock Beach Play Area, ensuring a more peaceful experience for visitors. It also specifies lake elevations where Accessible Shoreline Areas will be open or closed, clarifying that motor vehicle use in these areas must be limited to traveling directly between a road and the shoreline.
This updated regulation highlights the importance of personal responsibility in preserving shared public spaces. By adhering to these rules, visitors contribute to protecting the park's diverse landscapes and ensuring that Glen Canyon remains a destination for both motorized recreation enthusiasts and those seeking tranquility in nature. Responsible recreation not only enhances the experience for all visitors but also safeguards the area’s ecological balance for future generations.
