Where To Raise Kids In Utah, According To New Rankings
We've been talking a lot on the radio lately about how the prediction markets, and how it seems like you can now make a “prediction investment” on just about anything. Well, it seems like if you look hard enough you can also find a comparison and ranking about anything. Here's another list sure to get some of you up in arms.
If you’re looking for the best place in Utah to raise a family, you might start with good schools, safe neighborhoods, friendly people and plenty of things for the kids to do. Or you could consult Niche, which has apparently figured out how to turn the whole business into a statewide report card.
Niche has released its 2026 rankings of the best places to raise a family in Utah, and the results offer some interesting reading for those of us in Southern Utah. The top spot goes to River Heights, a community in Cache County with a population of about 2,300. Highland comes in second, followed by Providence in third. Northern Utah communities dominate the upper reaches of the list.
How Do The Communities Of Southern Utah Rank?
So where does Southern Utah stand? Well, we’re going to have to work on our report cards.
Santa Clara delivers the region’s best showing at No. 70. Kanab comes in at No. 87, followed by St. George at No. 99. Enoch, just north of Cedar City, lands at No. 109, and Washington comes in at No. 114.
And Cedar City? It appears on page five of the rankings, but without a ranking number listed. Perhaps Niche is still grading the paper. Maybe our assignment got lost in the stack. Or perhaps Cedar City has achieved the rare distinction of being ranked without actually being ranked.
Niche says its formula considers public schools, crime rates, cost of living and family-friendly amenities, using data from sources including the U.S. Census, FBI, Bureau of Labor Statistics and CDC. Those are certainly legitimate things to consider.
But somewhere between the spreadsheets and the statistical analysis, it seems possible to lose sight of the fact that families are complicated creatures. Some want big-city amenities. Others want room to roam, a tight-knit community or a backyard where the kids can burn off enough energy to sleep through the night.
And does a community really become a better place to raise children because it finishes 69 spots ahead of another town? Are the kids in Santa Clara getting a better childhood than the kids in St. George? Should parents in Enoch start shopping for moving boxes because their town finished 39 places behind Santa Clara?
Of course not. At least, we hope not.

Rankings can be interesting, and the data behind them can tell us something useful. But they can also give the impression that raising a family is a competition, complete with winners, losers and a mysterious scoring system.
So congratulations to River Heights. You’re officially Utah’s top spot according to Niche. Down here in Southern Utah, we’ll keep raising our families, enjoying our red rocks and wondering exactly how many points we lost for sunshine.

Maybe next year some of the Southern Utah communities will show up higher in these rankings. Maybe I'll put that in the prediction markets.
