This winter, anglers looking to test their skills and enjoy the thrill of competition can participate in Utah's exciting ice fishing tournaments. Sponsored by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) and Utah State Parks, these events run from January through March and offer participants the chance to win prizes while contributing to the health of Utah’s fisheries. By harvesting overabundant fish species, these tournaments help maintain the ecological balance of local waters. Anyone aged 12 or older must have a valid Utah fishing license to join the events, and state park tournaments will also require an entrance fee.

Safety is paramount during winter fishing activities. Participants should familiarize themselves with ice safety guidelines available on the Utah State Parks website and take necessary precautions to avoid accidents. For advice on ice fishing techniques and tips to stay compliant with regulations, anglers can visit the DWR website.

A highlight of this year’s events is the Utah State Parks ice fishing tournament, which spans four state parks: East Canyon, Echo, Lost Creek, and Rockport. Participants can register for individual locations or for all four combined, with the entrance fee included in the registration cost. The tournament begins on January 18 at Lost Creek State Park, followed by East Canyon State Park on January 19. It continues on February 1 at Rockport State Park and concludes on February 2 at Echo State Park. Additional details and registration information are available on the State Parks Pass website.

For those new to ice fishing or eager to enhance their skills, the DWR is hosting a free ice fishing clinic on Saturday, January 11. The event will run from 10 a.m. to noon at the DWR Price Office, located at 319 N Carbonville Road in Price. Attendees will learn the basics of ice fishing, including ice safety, equipment, lure selection, and techniques. Although the clinic is free, participants are asked to register in advance on Eventbrite.
