Wildfires Continue to Burn in Southwest Utah and Eastern Nevada
Fire crews are battling multiple wildfires in the region as hot, dry, and windy conditions fuel fire growth in remote and rugged terrain. In southwest Utah, the France Canyon Fire is currently estimated at 400 to 500 acres. Located about 6.5 miles southeast of Hatch in the Powell Ranger District of the Dixie National Forest, the fire remains 0% contained.
Dense smoke and strong winds have made it difficult for crews to determine the exact boundaries of the fire. The wind has laid the smoke column across the landscape, obscuring the fire’s edge and complicating suppression efforts. The fire has pushed toward the Grand View Trail near Blubber Creek, with the most impacted areas including Blubber Creek, Badger Creek, Proctor, and Skunk Creek.
At this time, there are no structures or private properties in immediate danger. The fire is burning generally away from these areas, aided by current wind patterns. Crews working the fire include two Type 1 helicopters, a Helitack crew, two Type 1 ground crews, and two Initial Attack Squads. A Type 3 Incident Management Team is expected to assume command today.
Two Fires Burning In Eastern Nevada
To the west in eastern Nevada, the Burnt Canyon Fire has grown to an estimated 1,000 acres in steep, remote terrain about 65 miles southeast of Ely. The fire showed active behavior overnight with wind-driven runs and occasional torching. Approximately 80 personnel are on scene under the direction of the Bureau of Land Management, working to secure containment lines.

Nearby, the Rosencrans Fire started about an hour later and is currently estimated at 700 acres. It is burning in similar terrain about five miles from the Burnt Canyon Fire. Crews are actively constructing fireline, with 25 personnel engaged in suppression efforts.

Forecasts call for continued hot, dry conditions with breezy afternoon winds, increasing challenges for firefighting crews across the region.
