For those seeking a unique holiday gift, Utah fishing and hunting licenses offer a year-round adventure into the state’s stunning outdoors. Whether for the dedicated angler or the novice hunter, these licenses make practical, memorable presents that can be used immediately and throughout the year. Along with licenses, registration fees for challenges like the Utah Cutthroat Slam or hunting slams add an extra layer of excitement to outdoor activities.

Winter doesn’t halt Utah’s outdoor opportunities. Ice fishing and hunting remain popular through December and beyond, with species like cottontail rabbits, chukar partridges, and snowshoe hares providing excellent game for enthusiasts. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) Coordinator Lindy Varney highlights the joy these activities bring, emphasizing that hunting and fishing allow people to explore Utah’s beauty in new ways. “A combination license is the gift that keeps on giving because you can use it year-round for the different seasons of fishing and hunting,” she stated in a press release. “It’s a great way to spend time with your loved ones and to make unforgettable memories.”

Licenses can be purchased online, at DWR offices, or from local agents. A combination license, allowing both fishing and small-game hunting, is a versatile option. To gift a license, buyers need basic information about the recipient, such as their name, date of birth, and contact details. Licenses can be mailed to the buyer or directly to the recipient, but orders should be placed early to ensure delivery by Christmas.

For experienced hunters or anglers, extending an existing license is another thoughtful option. License extensions can add one to five years to a current license but are available only if the license expires within six months. Costs vary depending on age and type, with fishing licenses starting at $5 for youths and combination licenses at $20 for teenagers.

Beyond standard licenses, the Utah Cutthroat Slam invites anglers to catch all four native cutthroat trout species in their historic ranges. The $20 registration fee contributes to conservation projects. Similarly, hunters can participate in the Utah Waterfowl and Upland Game Slams, which offer challenges like harvesting specific species under unique conditions. These slams include collectible leg bands or coins and fund habitat improvement initiatives statewide.
