On April 9, 2024, the West Panguitch Irrigation and Reservoir Company discovered a potential issue with the dam at Panguitch Lake during an inspection. Due to high water levels and ice pressure, a 2-5 foot expansion section of the dam began to tilt and develop cracks, raising concerns about its integrity. This expansion section, added in the 1930s/40s, is at risk of compromise.

Officials, however have reported that the main portion of the dam remains intact. Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that “a complete dam breach is not likely or anticipated.” While that brings a sigh of relief to area residents, there is still some danger. If the expansion portion of the dam did breach, the top two to five feet of Panguitch Lake would be released down stream.

The breach risk is currently at level 2, indicating a potential dam failure situation. However, authorities are actively monitoring the situation and implementing mitigation measures. These measures include releasing water to lower the lake level, reinforcing affected dam sections with additional material, trenching the reservoir ice to relieve pressure, and clearing water pathways to prevent overflow and debris buildup.

In the event of a breach, homes and properties on the Western portion of Panguitch could be impacted by floodwaters. Traffic and evacuation plans have been established to ensure public safety. Despite the situation, Panguitch City remains fully operational and is not under evacuation orders.

The Utah Department of Public Safety is collaborating with local authorities to disseminate information, provide traffic control, and coordinate community activities.

To address concerns and provide updates, a community meeting was held on Wednesday April 10, 2024, at Panguitch High School Gymnasium. This meeting had to both in-person attendance and live streaming for those unable to attend physically.
