There's a lot of talk right now about how much things cost. Every day when I pass the gas pumps the price seems to be going up by not the smallest of jumps. Interesting, how prices were trending down going in to the mid-term elections and that news was be shouted from the mountain tops, but we don't hear much about gas prices these days, but that's a discussion for another day. We talk about the prices for eggs, how much to go out and eat and everything else.

But today I'd like to talk about something that I think has more value than eggs, gas and all the rest. In our pursuits to have the finances we want so we can obtain the things we want, we can do something about our current financial situations. We can take a second job, get additional training to better our skills and strike out on our own and provide products or services that others will pay us for.

But the resource I'm talking about is one where it is set and finite, and everyone is given the same allotment on a daily basis.

Time.

At the stroke of midnight, each of us, while mostly sleeping, are given another beginning to a new 24 hour period to achieve our goals. And while we have proper concern about how our financial budgets are being strained these day, I observe that our budgets of time are under much more pressure. Family, work, church, civic groups, volunteering, education, and so much more are putting increasing demands on out daily allotment of time.

So, if you're like me, when that rare occurrence of unscheduled time comes around, it has greater value than a work bonus or other unexpected income increase. A question I often ask guests that join us on the radio show is, “if your boss called today and said, take the day of, with pay, what would you do?”

Killing time is something that we all do from time to time, whether it’s due to boredom, waiting for someone, or simply having a spare hour with nothing else to do. However, it’s important to make the most of this time and use it in a productive or enjoyable way. Here are some ideas to consider doing if you are gifted with an hour or so open time.

One option is to engage in a hobby or activity that you enjoy. This could be anything from painting, playing an instrument, or working on a puzzle. Engaging in a hobby can be a great way to relax and unwind, while also providing a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. It can also be a great way to develop new skills and learn new things. As I have written, I enjoy the hobby of amateur radio, and given an extra hour to try and make contacts is always welcome.

Another option is to get some exercise. Physical activity is not only good for our health, but it can also help to boost our mood and relieve stress. You could go for a walk, run, or bike ride, or try a new workout at home. Exercise can also be a great way to get out of the house and enjoy the fresh air, which can be especially beneficial if you’ve been spending a lot of time indoors.

If you’re looking to spend some time on personal growth, consider learning a new skill or taking an online course. There are many websites and apps that offer free or low-cost courses on a wide range of topics, from programming to cooking to photography. This can be a great way to challenge yourself and improve your knowledge and skills in a specific area. Another way to self improve is to read. Reading clears and improves the mind at the same time. The best part of reading is the unlocking it can be to the imagination.

If you’re in the mood for some social interaction, consider reaching out to friends or family members for a chat or video call. Spending time with loved ones can be a great way to connect and catch up, and can also help to boost your mood and reduce feelings of loneliness or isolation.

Another option is to do some de-cluttering or organizing. Clearing out your home, office, or other living spaces can not only help you to feel more organized and in control, but it can also be a great way to find items that you may have forgotten about or to make room for new things.

Finally, consider using your free time to give back to others. This could involve volunteering at a local charity or organization, helping a neighbor in need, or simply spreading kindness and positivity through acts of kindness and generosity. Giving back to others can not only help to make the world a better place, but it can also bring a sense of purpose and fulfillment to your own life.

There are many different ways to kill an hour, and the best way to spend your time will depend on your personal preferences and mood. So if you are gifted an hour or so to be left to your own devices, make sure to use this time in a way that brings you happiness and satisfaction.
