Why Utah Is Winning Hearts As The Top Moving Destination
Let me just say from the beginning here, I'm a bit of a hermit, so that is the perspective I have. In saying that, I sometimes wish places like Consumer Affairs would just take a heaping tablespoon of hush. Sometimes, I would like to keep things to myself, but no, they have to blab out the news.
If anyone has visited southern Utah lately, it probably wouldn't surprise them that Utah has once again claimed the number one spot on ConsumerAffairs’ “Best States to Move To” list for 2025. From red rock canyons to booming communities, the Beehive State scored high across the board, edging out New Hampshire and Idaho for the top spot.
Utah Measures Up In Every Category
The study measured affordability, safety, economy, health care and education, and overall quality of life. Utah didn’t just shine in one category—it did well in all of them. That balance is what makes it stand out. In places like Cedar City and St. George, families are finding that housing is still relatively affordable compared to big cities, while jobs in health care, education, and tourism keep the economy humming.
Safety was another big factor, and Utah scored better than many states. With lower crime rates and a relatively low climate risk, it’s easier to settle in with peace of mind. Pair that with Southern Utah’s fresh air and wide-open landscapes, and the quality-of-life category practically takes care of itself. After all, how many places let you spend one weekend skiing at Brian Head and the next hiking in Zion or Bryce Canyon?
Health care and education also contributed to Utah’s strong showing. Southern Utah University in Cedar City and Utah Tech University in St. George continue to attract students and support the local workforce, while expanding health services in the region are improving access for families.

Meanwhile, New Mexico landed at the very bottom of the rankings, dragged down by low scores in safety, health care, and education, despite its sunshine and affordable housing.
The takeaway? Moving isn’t just about cheaper rent or nice weather—it’s about finding a place where all the pieces fit together. And for many, especially those drawn to Southern Utah’s balance of opportunity and scenery, it looks like Utah is still the place to be.

But do we really have to tell everyone about it?
