Murder Trial Underway In The Death Of Provo Police Officer

The trial is underway for the man who is charged with the death of a Provo police officer. Matt Hoover is on trial for the line of duty death of Officer Joseph Shinners. Hoover is charged with aggravated murder, possession of a dangerous weapon, failure to stop at the command of an officer and possession of a controlled substance. The police officer died of a gunshot wound he received in the parking lot of the former Bed Bath and Beyond on University Avenue in Orem. The prosecution says Hoover shot the officer who was wearing a bulletproof vest with a pistol. The defense claims Hoover was trying to kill himself in January 2019 not the officer when he fired the pistol. Prosecutors say Hoover tested positive for methamphetamine after he was arrested. If convicted, Hoover could face the death penalty or life in prison without parole.
