Cedar City Hospital will once again open its doors to the community for a morning focused on health, wellness and a few activities that are a little more fun than your average medical appointment.

The hospital’s annual Family Health Fair and flu shot clinic is set for Saturday, October 10, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Cedar City Hospital main concourse. Some activities will also be located outside the hospital.

Rachelle Hughes, Communications Manager for Intermountain Health Cedar City Hospital, said the event is designed to encourage people to think about staying healthy before they need to visit the hospital because they are sick.

Health Fair Brings You To The Hospital To Help Stay Well, Not When You're Sick

“I think that, first of all, the purpose of the health fair is that we really want to have our community We want to keep you healthy. And so, we have a lot of booths there that are pre-screenings, that have health information. Just because a lot of people come to the hospital when they're already sick, we like to invite you for a morning to come and find out how to keep yourself well. And we love to reach out to the community. We have activities for children. We have activities for every age of adult. That can really, and that's really our purpose. We really want to keep you healthy. We want to help you live your healthiest life,” Hughes said on the Big Picture Morning show on KSUB radio.

Visitors can expect a variety of health screenings and information, including hearing screenings, BMI checks, blood pressure and oxygen screenings, along with information about healthy eating.

The Southwest Utah Public Health Department will operate a flu shot clinic at the event. Hughes said there are low- or no-cost flu shots available, depending on individual circumstances, and people can visit SWUhealth.gov/flu for information and to pre-fill consent forms.

One of the more unusual attractions will be the return of the Teddy Bear Clinic for children 12 and under. Children can bring their own teddy bear, or the first 150 children attending can receive a free bear. They can then take their stuffed patient through a mock clinic to help them become more comfortable with medical care.

There will also be car-seat checks and a car-seat giveaway.

Adults will have another opportunity as well, with a mobile mammography unit on site. Women over 40, or those who are due for a mammogram, can walk in or make an appointment. The mobile unit can be reached at 435-676-1267.

The health fair will also provide a look at the future of Cedar City Hospital. Visitors can tour the hospital’s linear accelerator, or LINAC, used for radiation treatment of cancer. Hughes said the hospital is preparing to expand its cancer center to nearly twice its current space, while also planning an additional office building for specialists.
