Cedar City Passes Ordinance Banning ‘For Sale’ Vehicle Parking on City Streets
Hmmm....it seems to me that we are starting to take a few lessons from St. George Code Enforcement here in Cedar City.
Cedar City residents will need to find alternative ways to sell their vehicles after the City Council approved a new ordinance on Wednesday, May 7, prohibiting the parking of cars on public streets for the primary purpose of displaying them for sale.
While the ordinance—Section 35-13—is technically in effect immediately, the Cedar City Police Department is prioritizing public education before enforcing penalties. Police will issue warnings through Memorial Day, after which vehicles in violation may be towed and citations issued.

According to Cedar City Police Chief Darin Adams, the ordinance is part of a broader effort to maintain clear roadways, enhance public safety, and preserve the city’s appearance. “We understand this is a significant change for our community, but we hope that over the next few weeks, we can efficiently share about the change and work together to keep our streets in compliance,” Adams said in a press release.
There Are Some Loopholes You Can Use
There are a few exceptions outlined in the ordinance. Vehicles may be parked on a public street if they are in active use by the owner, or if they are displayed on a street with a speed limit of 25 mph or less and parked directly in front of the seller’s legal residence or the residence of someone they are temporarily visiting.
This change also aligns with existing Utah law, which limits parking on public streets to 72 hours before a vehicle must be moved, regardless of signage or intent.

Cedar City officials encourage residents to learn more about Ordinance 35-13 by visiting www.cedarcityut.gov. The city’s leadership hopes the new regulation will lead to safer, cleaner, and more navigable neighborhoods.
