Utah's hunters who missed out on buck deer or bull elk permits earlier this year still have a final opportunity to secure permits for this fall's hunts. Beginning in July, a series of permit sales will take place on a first-come, first-served basis. To purchase a permit, hunters must hold a valid hunting or combination license.

For elk, general-season archery permits will be available starting July 9th, with unlimited availability. Youth permits, also unlimited, allow those 17 and younger to hunt across all general-season elk hunts. Adult permits for any bull elk open on July 11th, split into early and late seasons, with the early season offering 15,000 permits. Muzzleloader and multi-season spike bull elk permits will be available from July 18th.

Remaining general-season buck deer permits, totaling 700, will also go on sale July 9th, alongside youth archery deer permits and limited-entry buck deer permits, each offering additional opportunities for hunters. Over-the-counter bison permits for the Nine Mile hunting unit will also be available starting July 9th, with no limit on availability, though completion of an online orientation course is required.

Interested hunters can purchase permits online, at DWR offices, or from licensed agents, but should be mindful of the 8 a.m. start time to secure their spot. A virtual waiting room will manage the high demand online, ensuring fair access to permits. Lindy Varney, DWR Wildlife Licensing Coordinator, emphasized that this is the last chance for many to participate in Utah's big game hunts this year.

For detailed permit specifics, including hunting units and quantities available, hunters are advised to visit the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources website. While the website won’t update in real-time after sales begin, it will show remaining permit numbers prior to each sale date.

Before hitting the field, hunters should review the 2024 Utah Big Game Field Regulations Guidebook. Varney also highlighted the opportunity to mentor youth during these hunts, promoting the passing down of outdoor traditions.

Whether you're chasing elk, deer, or bison, these final permit sales provide a critical opportunity to join Utah's fall hunting season. For more information and to secure your permit, visit the DWR website or a licensed agent near you.
