Today, Congresswoman Celeste Maloy (R-UT), alongside Speaker Mike Johnson and colleagues in the House and Senate, presented the Congressional Gold Medal to the Ghost Army during a ceremony held at Emancipation Hall. On February 6, 2024, the House passed a resolution sponsored by Reps. Maloy and Annie Kuster (D-NH) authorizing the award ceremony to take place inside Emancipation Hall, ensuring that Congress recognized the heroic service of these World War II veterans and the many that died before receiving proper recognition. The Ghost Army was a top-secret unit during World War II employed to fool Nazi Germany and its Axis of Evil as to the strength and location of American troops. Five veterans from Utah served in the unit including Stanley Nance who passed away in 2021 at the age of 103. Staff Sargeant Nance led a squad of radio deceivers during World War II and sent 28 deceptive radio messages as part of an operation to assist General Patton’s relief of Bastogne.
Cedar City Man Arrested For Passing Fake Checks
A Cedar City man is facing criminal charges after depositing fake checks. German Mujica Aranda allegedly issued false checks to multiple banks and ATMS, and now faces a second degree felony. Aranda has been accused of depositing over eleven thousand dollars in bad checks and taking out almost ten-thousand dollars in cash in return. He is out on bail and will be in court on March 26th.
BLM Wins Lawsuit To Close Off Road Trails Near Moab
Off-road enthusiasts will be without over 300-miles of land formally designated for off-roading after a federal judge ruled in favor of the Bureau of Land Management. The land in question is in the Labyrinth Rims, Gemini Bridges area. The land was closed in an effort to protect riparian habitats, preserve cultural resources and minimize damage to watersheds and vegetation. Those who use the trails say that some of the most popular roads have been cut off.
University of Utah Releases UFO Study
The University of Utah recently released a study on UFO sightings. The study took from a national database with nearly 100-thousand entries spanning nearly 20 years. The results showed that if you want the best odds to see an Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, the west is the best place to be. The next step in the study will be the dates of the recorded sightings and seeing if they align with any cultural events like a space launch or a sci-fi tv show.
