As Memorial Day weekend and Free Fishing Day approach, anglers across Utah are gearing up for some of the best fishing of the year—especially in the scenic waters of southern Utah. Memorial Day weekend kicks off on Saturday, May 24, and typically marks the start of summer recreation across the state. With warming temperatures, fish are especially active and hungry, making this an excellent time to cast a line.

Just two weeks later, on Saturday, June 7, Utahns of all ages can participate in Free Fishing Day, when no license is required to fish at any public waterbody in the state. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) encourages everyone to take advantage of the opportunity. “Because you don’t need a license to fish on Free Fishing Day, it’s the perfect time to take someone with you and introduce them to this incredible activity,” said Trina Hedrick, Sportfish Coordinator for the DWR, in a press release.

In southern Utah, the DWR is hosting a free event on June 7 from 9 a.m. to noon at Blanding Reservoir No. 4 in San Juan County. Attendees can fish, learn tips from DWR biologists, and get advice on gear and fishing spots in six southeastern Utah reservoirs. While equipment will be available, participants are encouraged to bring their own and register in advance through Eventbrite.

Southern Utah also boasts some of the state’s top fishing destinations. Lake Powell—stretching across Garfield, Kane, and San Juan counties—offers outstanding fishing for striped bass, walleye, and a variety of panfish. Fish Lake, near Capitol Reef National Park in Sevier County, is excellent for rainbow trout, yellow perch, and splake this time of year. Both locations are known for their natural beauty and are ideal for boat-based anglers.
