Iron County Elementary Students To Participate In Walk And Bike To School Day
Elementary school students in Iron County are going to be participating in the 27th annual national Walk and Bike to School Day on October 4th. This will be the first year Iron County schools will be participating in the event.
Walk and Bike to School Day is an annual event celebrated in many countries around the world. The primary goal of this event is to encourage students, parents, and the community to use active transportation methods, such as walking and biking, for their journey to school. This initiative promotes a range of benefits, including physical activity, reduced traffic congestion, improved air quality, and enhanced community connections.
“In Cedar City and throughout the County, we want kids to know they can get to school safely whether that be by foot, bike, bus, or personal vehicle,” explained Sergeant J. Ludlow from the Cedar City Police Department in a press release.
When students arrive at their schools on October 4th, it's likely they will be greeted by high fives from police officers or elected officials as they walk in to the schools. During the day they will also participate in “walking school busses,” and be given safety education and materials explaining safe routes to the schools, including correct use of crosswalks and bike lanes.
Several organizations are a part of the committee sponsoring the day in Iron County. Representatives from Iron County School District, Cedar City, Enoch, and Parowan, Cedar City Police and Enoch Police Departments, Iron County Sheriff’s Office, Cedar City Fire Department, Southwest Utah Public Health Department, and the Cedar City Active Transportation Committee are involved.
“Every elementary school in the district will participate individually based on the school’s needs, location, and capacity. We are working with our staff and the Parent Teacher Associations to provide a safe, fun, and educational experience,” explained Shauna Lund, Iron County School District's Communications and Foundation Coordinator in the press release.
Walk and Bike to School Day is a valuable initiative that encourages active transportation, fosters community engagement, and promotes the well-being of students.
School busses will operate on a regular schedule on the Walk and Bike to School day. Each school will be sending out information on the events they will be presenting during the day.
