45 Cedar City Kids Heading To Kohl's For Free Back-to-school Shopping

For dozens of Iron County School District students, the start of the new school year will include something many children take for granted: the chance to pick out brand-new school clothes.

The Iron County School District Foundation, with the help of community partners, is launching a back-to-school shopping event that will provide about 45 students with $150 to purchase clothing, shoes and other essentials before classes begin. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, July 29, at Kohl's Department Store in Washington, Utah.

Students will depart from the district office in Cedar City at 6:30 a.m., traveling by bus with a volunteer shopper before arriving at Kohl's for the morning shopping trip. The event begins at approximately 7:30 a.m.

Volunteers Will Help With The Shopping

Roughly 50 volunteers, many of them district employees and educators donating their time, will accompany students throughout the shopping experience. Armed with gift cards, clothing sizes and a list of needed items provided by parents or guardians, volunteers will help each child select clothing, shoes, socks and underwear. At the conclusion of the shopping trip, every student will also receive a backpack filled with school supplies. To make the early morning outing even more special, participants will enjoy donuts along with milk or juice during the bus ride.

School principals and counselors identify the students who participate, helping ensure the assistance reaches children and families with the greatest need.

The inaugural event is being funded through donations to the Iron County School District Foundation and contributions designated to support homeless students. Foundation leaders hope to make the shopping trip an annual tradition and are inviting community members to help sponsor future participants by making a donation to the Foundation's Back to School campaign.
